Liverpool teenager Curtis Jones was delighted to get a chance to impress and score a brilliant goal to settle the Merseyside derby FA Cup tie as Everton's woeful run at Anfield continued.
Jones, at 18 years and 340 days, became the youngest goalscorer in the derby since fellow Toxteth-born forward Robbie Fowler in 1994 and his superb curling effort off the underside of the crossbar was a goal of which the man known in these parts as 'God' would have been proud.
The 1-0 defeat heaped more embarrassment on a virtually full-strength Everton, who have not won on this ground since 1999, as they failed to beat a side registering nine changes which included two debutants and a third who played 81 minutes after injury to James Milner.
Afterwards, Jones said: 'I just go out there and try and play my game. It's been frustrating to be on the bench then getting a bit of a taste for it, then on the bench again.
'There are times in my head where I'm begging to come on. So I just tried to go out there and show what I'm capable of doing.
'Hopefully, I've topped it off with a good performance and, what everyone is saying, a great goal.
'I can't sum up my emotions. For me it's huge just being around this team every day and learning from this group of players. There are world-class players all over this team but I think I went out and showed what I could do on the pitch.'
Adam Lallana praised the young Liverpool players for their performances against their arch rivals.
He said: 'They have been absolutely brilliant this season. It's frustrating at times because they obviously want to play.
'It's at times like this when they get the opportunity to show what they are capable of, and like the manager said they are more than ready to play.
'At times it's frustrating because they are playing for the best club in the world and that's a fact.
'They are training with us day in and day out and he (Jones) took his opportunity like everyone else.'
