Jordan Pickford 'TERRIFIED injury setback could cost him a place in England's Euro 2020 squad'

Jordan Pickford is seriously concerned that his current struggle with injury may derail his hopes of making England's Euro 2020 squad.

The Everton man, when fit, has been Gareth Southgate's first-choice between the sticks - but failed to feature in the latest international break with an abdominal issue.

And The Sun have now claimed that Pickford is 'terrified' any more setbacks during his recovery may see him miss out on a hectic summer of action.

Pickford remains on the treatment table after being forced to sit out on the three World Cup qualifiers - and is aware he needs to be 100 per cent ready.

Boss Southgate is thought to have a firm rule over not taking half-fit players to summer tournaments and Pickford is said to be hopeful he will not fall foul of that.

The 27-year-old is yet to return to first-team training at Goodison Park but may be able to take part later this month.

A number of other injury woes have seen Pickford endure a mixed campaign for his club - with his performances notably dropping and coming under heavy scrutiny.

His latest appearance for Everton came in the 2-1 defeat by Burnley on March 13. He was withdrawn before the interval.

Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope pulled on the No 1 jersey in Pickford's absence in England's recent fixtures and impressed.

Pope, 28, is renowned for his confidence and athleticism for the Turf Moor outfit but question marks remain over whether he will be selected ahead of a fit Pickford.

He was criticised in some quarters for his role in Poland's leveller at Wembley on Wednesday, having played out from the back before John Stones made his mistake.

Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone were the other two shot stoppers named in the squad - but, out of the two, it is likely to be the Manchester United man who travels.

Southgate revealed he has already held 'horrible' conversations with several England players to explain where they feature in his plans ahead of the tournament.

Sportsmail understands that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Michael Keane have already spoken with the Three Lions coach.

It is also thought that, despite contrasting reports, Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho are on course to be chosen despite Jesse Lingard's born-again form at West Ham.
