Virgil van Dijk is not used to feeling small, but the big Dutch defender could not hide his shock after meeting 7ft7in Boston Celtics' basketball star Tacko Fall.

Van Dijk, who towers above most Premier League strikers at 6ft4, said: 'What? He will eat me alive, for breakfast,' after meeting Fall during Liverpool's pre-season tour of America.

Boss Jurgen Klopp also joked that Fall would make the perfect striker after taking time pose with him in the team dressing room.

Fall, 23, and team-mate Gavin Williams, standing at a modest 6ft7, posed for photos with the squad, with Senegalese-born center drawing gasps from certain players.

Indeed, Klopp compared Fall to recently-retired ex-Liverpool striker Peter Crouch, known for his height despite being a foot shorter at 6ft7.

Fall and Williams have both joined the Celtics this year after leaving college and entering the NBA draft

Williams, 20, was the 22nd first round pick, while Fall went undrafted before being signed to an Exhibit 10 Contract in June.

Despite the jokes shared in the changing room, Liverpool have endured a difficult pre-season campaign in America, losing both games so far.

They suffered a 3-2 defeat by Borussia Dortmund at Notre Dame Stadium, before a 2-1 reverse to 10-man Sevilla.

They will next face Sporting Lisbon in a bid to turn around their pre-season form, with star players Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane still on holiday after playing in the Africa Cup of Nations
