Kahn: Nagelsmann must think carefully before taking Manchester United job

The former Bayern Munich board chairman shared his thoughts on the possibility of Manchester United appointing Nagelsmann.

After a dismal 1-4 away defeat to Serie A dark horse Como 1907 in the Champions League, Carrick's position as manager is precarious. Manchester United is also far from reaching its Premier League targets, having collected just 7 points from 7 matches. Players have continuously voiced criticism, and it seems only a matter of time before Carrick is sacked. This heavy Champions League defeat could be the final straw, with The Telegraph mentioning Nagelsmann as a potential candidate for Old Trafford, alongside Antonio Conte on the shortlist.

The Manchester United manager's job seems to attract scrutiny almost every year. Since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, eight different managers have taken charge, not counting interim coaches. Even renowned managers like Van Gaal, Mourinho, and Rangnick ultimately ended their tenures unsuccessfully. Therefore, Kahn urged the 39-year-old coach to carefully consider any offer from Manchester United: "He has to ask himself: what is my next step? Does this step have to be the right one? Or is it associated with a huge risk from the outset, like Manchester United – where all managers have ultimately failed over the years? …He really needs to take a close look at what he's stepping into."

Kahn also reflected on Nagelsmann's recent experiences. "Both Bayern Munich and the German national team have dealt him heavy blows. You have to think carefully: what are my strengths? Which club can I truly help? I think Julian is the kind of person who can build a club and a team and help them progress. Whether Manchester United is the right next step for him, only he can judge," he said.

However, Kahn did not explicitly discourage Nagelsmann from taking on the challenge at Manchester United. "If Julian is convinced that he is the one who can bring Manchester United back on track to success, then let him try," he said. Fellow guest Roman Weidenfeller added: "I think German coaches are very popular abroad given their reputation, and Julian Nagelsmann especially so."
