Kariobangi Sharks 1-1 Everton (4-3 on pens): Marco Silva's young side fail

Everton's young squad were given a good run-out during their first pre-season match in Kenya on Sunday against Kariobangi Sharks.

Marco Silva's Premier League outfit were held to a 1-1 draw during normal time of the SportPesa clash, before eventually falling to a 4-3 defeat on penalties.

But Silva will be pleased with Everton's output on the weekend, having seen his youthful side pushed right to the end at the 60,000-capacity Kasarani Stadium.

Everton went behind in the 27th minute on the weekend as Sharks' Duke Abuya gave the Kenyan side a deserved lead.

And it was great play from the forward as he broke the offside trap, before cutting inside and side-footing home after toying with Maarten Stekelenburg.

But the Toffees found a way back into the game through a brilliantly-taken goal from Joe Williams in the 53rd minute.

The 22-year-old Everton midfielder coolly passes the ball into the bottom corner of the net past the un-sighted Sharks goalkeeper.

Neither side could find a late breakthrough during normal time, so the friendly had to be decided by penalties.

And it was the Sharks who ran out 4-3 winners, with Sharks shot-stopper Brian Bwire the hero.

Bwire saved two penalties before converting the winner in front of a packed crowd at the Kasarani Stadium.

The Goodison Park outfit have travelled to Kenya as part of their relationship with sponsors SportPesa.
