Roy Keane has admitted he once chowed down on a doner kebab just three hours before a top level match with Manchester United, during a revealing chat with his fellow commentator Micah Richards.

The Sky Sports duo have continued their Road to Wembley series ahead of the upcoming European championships, and Richards opted to ask his renowned spiky fellow ex-pro about the diet of footballers today.

Keane, speaking frank and honestly, outlined that the level from his day compared to the current crop is a gulf apart.

The Irishman revealed: 'I played a cup game before Crystal Palace at home and three hours before the game I had a kebab.

After Richards had broke out into a fit of hysterics and managed to calm himself down again, Keane continued.

'A doner kebab from the chipper. Three hours before the game.

'When you're younger you get away with it, but obviously you pay for it later on. You think you're getting away with it, having a bit of a laugh about it and being a jack the lad.

'In fairness though I did live by myself and I didn't have any food in the house.'

Keane went on to note how this vastly differs from the footballers of today, and how dietary habits and the popularity of personalised chefs means that the longevity of careers will be aided.

The United legend turned to Man City starlet Phil Foden as his case in point, and insisted the attacking midfielder could go on to dominate well beyond the twilight of a usual career, just like Cristiano Ronaldo.

Keane added: 'I saw Foden getting interviewed the other day, he was on about cooking. He said "no, I've got a chef." He's got a chef!

'Foden's fueling up properly. He's probably having a proper breakfast.

'He's recovering, he's eating the proper foods at the right times, look at Ronaldo.

'So Foden will get the benefits also when he's 36, 37. Guarantee he'll still be playing at a high level
