Klopp & Guardiola have a fierce exchange of words before Liverpool-City clash

Liverpool will now be fully focused on their mammoth encounter with Manchester City after beating Genk 2-1 on Tuesday night.

The European champions will welcome the Premier League title holders to Anfield on Sunday, aiming for a win to extend their lead at the top of the domestic table to nine points after 12 games.

Such is the gravity of the encounter, managers of both teams have already been drawn in to talking about their opposition.

Pep Guardiola first kicked off proceedings by labelling Sadio Mane as a 'diver' following the Reds last minute 2-1 win against Aston Villa on Saturday, in which the Senegalese attacker scored the final goal but was booked for simulation earlier on in the match.

The City boss made his comments during a post-match press conference after watching his team beat Southampton - which kicked off at the same time as the Liverpool game.

Jurgen Klopp, in turn, rejected the criticism of Mane and questioned how a manager would find time post-match to know about such details and the result of another game.

The German then aimed his own dig at City by claiming he would "not mention tactical fouls" in his response to Guardiola's comments during a pre-match press conference ahead of Genk.

“I couldn't really believe it to be honest and then I saw it,” the Liverpool manager said.

“I am not sure if Pep spoke in that moment about Sadio or the team – both is not too nice to be honest.

“I am not too sure if I want to put oil on the fire. I am not interested in these kind of things. And I promise not to mention tactical fouls. That is maybe already too much.”

Of course, as Guardiola previewed City's clash set to take place away at Atalanta on Wednesday night, the Catalonian was asked about Klopp's response to his comments.

And he took no time to seize an opportunity to ramp up the mind games.

“I don't know. I didn't listen to what he said," Guardiola said.

But all is not what it seemed.

Why? Because this was his answer when asked about tactical fouling.

“No comment. I don't put oil on the fire.”

Now let's just re-read Klopp's exact quote on Pep:

“I am not too sure if I want to put oil on the fire. I am not interested in these kind of things. And I promise not to mention tactical fouls.”

Looks like that fire is well and truly burning.
