Klopp: I have known Pulisic since he was a kid and he is a fantastic player

Liverpool were linked with a move for Christian Pulisic before ultimately deciding against signing the American winger 12 months ago.

20-year-old Christian Pulisic was simply expected to come to Anfield by many, given Jurgen Klopp had made no secret of his admiration for the American winger with whom he had worked at Borussia Dortmund.

Indeed, Liverpool had made a bid of £11 million for him during Klopp's first transfer summer at Anfield, now over three years ago.

At the time, Klopp was coy on a potential move for him, but far from ruled it out.

He said: "If Christian would at one point join us, I don't know. But I like him and it's not like that could be the problem.

"I have known him since he was a kid and he's still not really old. He's a fantastic player and it's deserved that people think highly of him.

"If he wants to play in England one day or whatever, he, for sure, has the chance to do so."

Certainly the final part of that prediction came true as Pulisic joined Chelsea for £58 million, now almost a year ago to the day.

Pulisic was sent back on loan to Germany for the remainder of last season, before he bolstered Chelsea's squad ahead of this campaign, effectively becoming the replacement for Eden Hazard, who joined Real Madrid.

Chelsea were given a free run at the winger, with Liverpool, despite earlier interest, no longer in the picture at that stage.
