Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has sent a message of congratulations to his father Pierre after he became the first-ever black elected-mayor in Belgium.

Pierre was announced as the chosen representative for the Brussels municipality of Ganshoren on Sunday evening following elections.

He won the race with 28.38 per cent of the vote and will now begin his three-year term overseeing the area that is home to 25,000 people.

Alongside a video of him and brother Francois on Instagram, Kompany congratulated his father on his historic election in French.

He wrote alongside the short clip: 'History! We are so proud of you dad. Came over from the DR Congo, as a refugee, in 1975.

'Now gained the trust of your local community becoming the first-ever black elected-mayor in Belgium! It was long overdue but it’s progress. Massive congrats!'

Kompany is currently away in Brussels with the Belgian national team for their UEFA Nations League win over Switzerland and the upcoming friendly against Holland.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku scored twice as Roberto Martinez's side defeated the Swiss 2-1 in Brussels on Friday night.

The Red Devils now welcome the Dutch to the Belgian capital on Tuesday after their impressive 3-0 win over Germany on Saturday.
