Koscielny on Arsenal exit: I was not as happy as I was on the first day I signed

Former Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny has opened up on his surprise north London exit last summer and insists he wants nothing but the best for his old club.

Koscielny spent nine years with the Gunners but headed for Bordeaux in the summer, while occupying the role of club captain.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang now occupies the armband and Koscielny insists he wants both the forward and the club as a whole to succeed.

Speaking to Canal Football Club, he said: 'I am happy for him (Aubameyang) for being appointed captain at Arsenal.

'I wish them the best, even though they are in a pretty tricky period.

'But there you have it, it is these moments where you see a team, a collective, ready to fight together to climb back up the pole!'

Koscielny's exit, and return to France, came as a huge shock for Arsenal fans and he admits he wasn't happy during the latter stages of his stint in north London.

Discussing his exit, the Frenchman said: 'I can understand why (Arsenal fans didn't understand him leaving). Nobody anticipated my Arsenal departure. To keep it simple, I was not as happy as I was on the first day I signed.

'And then with my family we needed to return home, to have a new challenge for us. To be able to become happy once again together, a return to France was the best solution.'

Another man who has recently left the Emirates is Unai Emery, and Koscielny was rumoured to have sent him a message of support in the days following his sacking.
