Manchester United need a new striker after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Many names are of interest including World Cup stars Cody Gakpo and Goncalo Ramos, but one name that has been touted in the past is Inter's Lautaro Martinez. The Argentinian striker was part of the Italian side's' Serie A winning campaign and has been lauded for his hold-up play and ability to link up with other attackers.
However after his performances at the World Cup, the links to United may finally end.
Many of the problems that would plague Martinez throughout the tournament were clear in their first game against Saudi Arabia. He was consistently offside and when he did find himself on the end of chances in a legal position, the 25-year-old was incredibly wasteful.
This became the story of his World Cup and the rest of his game was not up to scratch either. In the end, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni moved to start Julian Alvarez for the majority of the knockout stages.
Martinez played six games scoring no goals and registering zero assists. This is not the sort of tournament you want to have when the eyes of the world are watching on.
However many fans who watched the Serie A on a regular basis stated this was how Martinez usually performed. He is an effective goalscorer until he is under pressure and often crumbles then.
United need goals up front and when Martinez will likely cost a decent chunk of Erik ten Hag's budget, it seems there are much better options available to them.
The saying goes that you should never judge a player just off a World Cup, but when the tournament reinforces already existing views on a player then maybe you should consider your next move and for United that should be avoiding Martinez.
