Leeds fans have vented their fury on social media as recently-released Ezgjan Alioski looks set to join Galatasaray in the coming days.

Tensions are still extremely high between the two clubs after two travelling Leeds fans were stabbed to death by Galatasaray supporters prior to the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2000 in Istanbul.

And North Macedonian defender Alioski, who was released by Leeds a few weeks ago after both parties could not agree on a new contract, looks set to join the Super Lig club according to Turkish reports, sparking anger amongst Leeds faithful online.

One tweeted: 'No. F******. Way. Ezgjan Alioski don't do it,' tagging the 29-year-old, who spent four years at Elland Road.

Another said: 'Alioski moving to Galatasaray will destroy any sort of legacy he had at Leeds. And all this will do is bring up that night again for trolls on here to make awful jokes about.'

Similarly, another Leeds fan on Twitter said people should not defend Alioski: 'By the way, I don't want anyone to come on here and try to defend Alioski - whatever he did with us, ruined and forgotten by going to these lot. Don't want to hear it.'

A different disappointed fan simply said: 'Wow, I really didn't think Alioski would go to Galatasaray.'

A reporter at The Athletic quotes that 'everything in Turkey suggests that it's going to go ahead now', though there has been no comment from the player's representatives.

The loss of Kevin Speight and Christopher Loftus 21 years ago is still felt incredibly deeply and the feud between the clubs remains.

Leeds and Galatasaray fans clashed in violent scenes in April 2020 at 21:00 in Istanbul's Taksim Square

Following the two tragic deaths, local police arrested and charged four Galatasaray supporters with murder.

Galatasaray fans were banned from attending the second-leg at Elland Road, in a semi-final won by the Turkish side who went on to win the competition.

Former club legend Harry Kewell previously soured his relationship with Leeds fans after moving to Galatasaray from Liverpool in 2008.

At the time he said: 'It was a tragic thing in football but we can't live in the past. I am happy and I hope everyone else can be too.

'There were a lot of other clubs out there but this is perfect for me. Galatasaray wanted me from the start. The facilities are great. It's a fantastic city and I'm willing to learn.'
