Leeds United have opened discussions over a new contract for Adam Forshaw despite the club announcing that he is to be released.

The 31-year old midfielder was one of four players listed as exiting Leeds on Monday along with goalkeepers Joel Robles and Will Brook, plus winger Stuart McKinstry.

The club also added that Robles, who has interest from Everton, and Forshaw would be invited back for pre-season training in July.

However, Mail Sport understands that talks to extend Forshaw's stay have already begun.

Forshaw finished the season strongly under former manager Sam Allardyce who recommended to the board that they should keep the Liverpool-born player who has been at Elland Road for six years.

Forshaw has made over 90 appearances since joining from Middlesbrough and has vital experience from being with the club through their time in the Championship and Premier League.

Leeds' new owners 49ers Enterprises are well versed in his contribution and are aware of his value for next season despite the fact they have still to appoint a new manager and director of football.
