Legend: Arsenal may need to sell Ødegaard to sign Rogers

Arsenal legend Alan Smith believes Ødegaard could leave to make way for Morgan Rogers.

As Arteta looks to bring Rogers to the Emirates, Smith has identified the player most likely to be sold from the current Arsenal squad.

Arteta has targeted Aston Villa and England star Morgan Rogers as one of his primary transfer targets this summer. The Arsenal manager hopes to strengthen his title-winning squad and sees the 23-year-old as an ideal fit.

Over the past two seasons, Rogers has developed into one of the Premier League's standout midfielders. He helped Villa secure Champions League qualification and won the Europa League last season.

Rogers' performances earned him a call-up to Tuchel's England squad, and he came on as a substitute in England's first two group stage matches.

Although Rogers has also attracted interest from clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United, Arsenal is reportedly confident of winning the race, with a deal potentially exceeding £100 million.

Smith is not surprised by Villa's valuation of Rogers but suggests that his move to North London might depend on Arsenal selling players. He believes captain Ødegaard could be moved on.

Since joining from Real Madrid in 2021, Ødegaard has been a key player for Arteta, but his form and fitness were affected last season, scoring only one goal.

Reports earlier this week suggested that Arsenal would be willing to sell Ødegaard if a suitable offer was received.

Discussing Arsenal's pursuit of Rogers, Smith told BestBettingSites: "I think they'll be looking to get a very good transfer fee for Ødegaard as well."

"You can't bring in Rogers if no one leaves, because Eze is there too, and he likes to play in a similar position."

"Now it seems like every player available is priced at £100 million or close to it. I think that's all part of the selling club's negotiation."

"But he's still quite young, an England international, and a very good player who has proven himself in the Premier League."

"So Villa will start negotiations at a high price, and any club wanting to sign him will certainly have to spend a lot of money."

Another Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, also questioned Ødegaard's future at the Emirates, stating that Arteta would "most likely" consider selling him this summer.

Merson said on The Sports Agents show: "This might sound crazy, but I think they'll most likely consider selling Ødegaard."

"But in my opinion, I still think there will be many teams queuing up for him. When you play in Ødegaard's position, speed is very much needed in midfield. You have to have pace."

England have already secured their place in the World Cup knockout stages before their final group match against Panama on Saturday evening, and Rogers could still play a role in England's quest for the World Cup title.

Speaking about his club and national teammate, Villa forward Watkins said: "Morgan can reach the very top."

"You've seen what he can do in such a short space of 18 months—how he's improved and started performing at the highest level—and that's earned him deserved recognition."

"I think ultimately, he has a clear head. He's a smart person, works hard in training and matches, and believes in his abilities. I think he can reach the very top."

In addition to targeting Rogers, Arsenal are also pursuing a new striker, though Atlético Madrid are firm on Álvarez.

Ødegaard is not the only current Arsenal player linked with a summer move. It is understood that Arsenal are also willing to listen to offers for Gabriel Jesus, Martinelli, Trossard, and Ben White.
