Leicester City have poached Celtic head of recruitment Lee Congerton as he leaves the Scottish champions to reunite with Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic announced on Saturday morning that Congerton, 45, had left the club - and just half an hour later Leicester confirmed his appointment.

Congerton had previously worked with Rodgers in the Chelsea youth set-up and had widely been expected to make the move south to the King Power Stadium.

Leicester agreed to pay compensation to release him from his contract with Celtic, who were eager to keep Congerton.

However it is understood he was adamant he wanted to leave having grown frustrated by the lack of investment and restrictive approach to recruiting new talent.

Congerton came under criticism from supporters during his time at Celtic but Rodgers defended him aware of how difficult it had become to attract the quality of players they wanted.

The Celtic statement read: 'Lee Congerton is resigning from his post as the club's Head of Recruitment to take up new opportunities.

'The existing staff within Celtic's scouting and recruitment department will continue to work closely with club management on the identification of players who can benefit the club.

'The club has already commenced the process to appoint a new head of recruitment, something which will be completed as soon as possible.'

Congerton joined Celtic in March 2017, after Rodgers was appointed as manager the previous summer.

Like Rodgers, the former Crewe Alexandra player's career on the pitch was curtailed early by injury, and he moved into coaching initially with Wrexham.

Congerton worked at Liverpool before moving to Chelsea, where he became chief scout while Rodgers was coaching at Stamford Bridge. He has also served as technical director at Hamburg and sporting director at Sunderland.

Leicester had been looking for a new head of recruitment ahead of the summer transfer window after Eduardo Macia left the club in March.
