Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt has been given Germany's No.10 shirt following Mesut Ozil's retirement from international football.

Ozil announced his retirement  in July following unrest after he and team-mate Ilkay Gundogan posed for pictures with Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan prior to Germany's disastrous World Cup campaign.

Brandt, who has 19 caps for Germany, has been given the No 10 shirt for the Nations League game against France and the subsequent friendly against Peru.

Upon being allocated the shirt number, Brandt said: 'The no.10 holds a lot of meaning in football and in the national team. I'll give my all and hope to rise to the task.'

Lothar Matthaus, widely considered as one of Germany's greatest players of all time, often wore the No 10 shirt.

There is another significant squad number change for Germany, with Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka taking the No 6 shirt from Sami Khedira, who isn't in the latest squad.

Meanwhile, uncapped players Thilo Kehrer, Nico Schulz and Kai Havertz have been allocated Nos 20, 14 and 12 respectively.

Germany will be determined to return to winning ways having been knocked out of the World Cup at the group stages.
