Lionel Messi's wife Antonela Roccuzzo has revealed the true meaning of his celebration during Inter Miami's win over Atlanta on Wednesday.
The forward has made a stellar start to life at his new side after joining Inter Miami earlier this month following the expiration of his contract at PSG.
He scored a stoppage time free-kick to give Miami a late 2-1 win over Cruz Azul on his debut, before netting a brace against Atlanta on Wednesday in a comfortable 4-0 victory.
Messi's celebration after his second goal Wednesday made headlines with it suggested that his cupped-hand-like gesture was a 'hold my beer' reference aimed at franchise chief David Beckham, but it appears that wasn't the case.
Roccuzzo shared an imagine of the celebration on her Instagram story to her 36.2million followers, accompanied by a Thor gif, suggesting Messi was actually referencing the Marvel character.
According to Goal, Messi's sons are huge Marvel fans and his celebration was in tribute to them.
Thiago, Ciro and Mateo are said to have been in the crowd to see their father net twice in the first half of the game, and Messi wanted to pay tribute to the three of them.
Messi's sons where then reportedly spotted in the crowd smiling with glee as their father lit up the States once again.
After Messi netted the first goal as he latched onto a ball over the top from Sergio Busquets, smiling directly at Beckham, he appeared to make a celebration that fans are dubbing 'hold my beer'.
As Messi directed his gesture, the club president stood up and applauded his newest signing.
This led to fans believing the two had shared a perhaps iconic moment, but it appears the celebration may have been directed at his family rather than his new boss.
Beckham spoke in glowing terms about Messi after his arrival was confirmed this month, calling him 'a friend' and 'an amazing person'.
Antonela also was in the stands again to see her husband in action, joined by P Diddy, Camilla Cabello and DJ Khaled.
They were greeted at the stadium by Beckham, who took his seat next to wife Victoria.
Antonela was caught on camera cheering her husband along at the DRV PNK Stadium and before kickoff, she shared a selfie with Thiago, Mateo and Ciro.
The 35-year-old was actually first caught on camera by Apple TV cheering a goal by Robert Taylor - one of Messi's new teammates - shortly before halftime.
