Lisandro Martinez breaks his silence after suffering season-ending injury

Lisandro Martinez has paid tribute to Manchester United's fans for their messages of support after confirmation he will miss the rest of their campaign with a fractured metatarsal.

Martinez, 25, was carried off during the club's 2-2 home draw with Sevilla on Thursday night, and will play no further part as Man United battle on three fronts.

Now, he has confirmed the injury has brought an end to his first season with the Red Devils, and posted on Instagram to comment on his feelings.

Martinez wrote: 'Not the way I imagined what's been a very special season would end, but sometimes we face obstacles along the way that we have to overcome to make us stronger and we learn from them. I know that I'll be back very soon to go for more.

'In the meantime, I'll continue to support all my team-mates to achieve our objectives.

'The number of messages and support I've received has been amazing, they're giving me strength and encouragement at this moment. Many, many thanks to you all from the bottom of my heart.'

The club had previously issued a statement confirming the extent of the problem. It read: 'Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot.

'However, the Argentinian defender is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season.'

Alongside winning the World Cup with Argentina in December, Martinez has been an almost ever-present presence in the defence, making 45 Man United appearances.

It followed a £48.5m move from Dutch club Ajax last summer, and the 25-year-old has proved himself up to the task of handling the Premier League despite his height.

Manchester United may have to resort to a much-changed backline for their remaining fixtures, starting with the trip to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Raphael Varane, Martinez's usual partner at centre-back, is also set to miss several weeks of action, so Erik ten Hag is likely to turn to Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof to cover the middle of the defensive line.
