Liverpool: Sadio Mane reveals Jurgen Klopp altered training schedule for players observing Ramadan

Sadio Mane has revealed Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson convinced Jurgen Klopp to change the club's training schedule this month in order to accommodate players observing Ramadan.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide through fasting and prayers, began on Saturday 2 April and will end with the celebration of Eid on Monday 2 May.

Over the course of the month, Muslims are undergoing strict fasting from dawn until sunset, which has presented Premier League players partaking in the practice with difficulties.

Before evening matches, top-flight captains are able to request a drinks break at any appropriate moment of a game for Muslim players to break their fast once the sun has set.

Mane is one of the players in question, and the Liverpool winger has opened up on the challenges facing him and fellow Muslims Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Naby Keita during Ramadan.

'It's not easy because playing and training and doing Ramadan is not easy at all,' he told beIN SPORTS.

'But before Ramadan we tried to speak with the captain [Henderson] to tell the boss maybe can we change the schedule and train in the morning.

'It's easier for us. If you train in the morning then you have time to rest and go home - or the day is gonna be tough if not because if you train around two or three, it's gonna be tough!

'The coach said yes and I think that makes it easier and we're trying to do our best.'

When asked how Liverpool stars handle fasting on matchdays, Mane added: 'It's not easy, but like always the game day is something else!

'With Ramadan it's tough but I think Liverpool, they try to make everything easier for us.

'We speak with our nutrionist, Mona, and especially before the game day she did everything easier for us to make sure we can do our Ramadan.'

Klopp will hope his altered training schedule and the help of head nutrionist Mona Nemmer will get Mane firing in their Champions League clash Villarreal on Wednesday.

Unai Emery's side are making the trip to Anfield for the first leg of their semi-final tie, but Ramadan would have drawn to a close by the time the second comes around on May 3.
