Liverpool are set to hand youngster Harvey Elliott with a new long-term contract as a reward for the progress he has made since stepping into Jurgen Klopp's first-team.

The 19-year-old signed his latest contract with the club just 12 months ago but will now be handed a fresh deal as Liverpool seek to tie the attacker down to a period of longevity at Anfield.

His current five-year contract keeps him at Liverpool until 2026, but the new deal will both further extend his period of commitment and raise his weekly wage.

Elliott, an attacking midfielder who can also be played on the wing, will be challenging for a starting place in the Merseyside club's midfield with the new Premier League season underway.

Thiago Alcantara's hamstring injury has opened the door for Elliott to stake a claim for himself in the club's serial winning midfield alongside skipper Jordan Henderson and Brazilian stalwart Fabinho.

The injury also presents a chance for new signing Fabio Carvalho to force his way into Klopp's plans along with veteran James Milner who is also ready to step in.

Elliott joined Liverpool in 2019 from Fulham for a fee of £1.5million. A hefty price for an unproven academy product may have been bawked at then, but in today's transfer market that is a steal.

He was originally loaned back to Fulham before then being sent back out on loan to Championship side Blackburn.

Elliott impressed as he scored seven goals and registered 11 assists in just 41 games for his loan club before returning to Liverpool at the start of last season.

The young midfielder started last season brightly before a horror tackle involving Leeds' Pascal Struijk saw Elliott's career almost prematurely ended as he was left requiring ankle surgery.

Elliott completed his remarkable return to help Liverpool finish their season with trophy success in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
