Liverpool are continuing to monitor the progress of Anderlecht starlet Jeremy Doku - despite their deal for the teenage forward bizarrely falling, reports in Belgium claim.
The 17-year-old forward traveled to Anfield last year and met with manager Jurgen Klopp, who is said to have seen him as a future successor to Sadio Mane, but the deal failed to come to fruition after a mix-up that he was set to sign for Chelsea.
But the Reds want to revive their bid for Doku after the confusion ahead of a possible move this summer, according to Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad.
Doku has made his mark in his country's top flight after making his debut for Anderlecht this season, and his manager has shown how highly he rates the youngster by playing him 22 times this season.
He has rewarded that faith by netting twice and laying on four assists.
The player's father has revealed the story of Liverpool's interest in him and their subsequent trip to the club, before the move broke down in bizarre circumstances.
'At the age of 16, Jérémy could sign a pro contract with Anderlecht,' he said. 'But even then Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Ajax and PSV were interested,'
'My preference was Liverpool. How we were received there, damn. Trainer Klopp explained how he saw a potential successor to Sadio Mané in Jérémy. Steven Gerrard showed us videos with tactical analysis.'
But he claims Liverpool were thrown off after overhearing Doku speaking about 'Chelsea', which is the name of his sister.
'At the training complex Mignolet, Mané and Wijnaldum came to talk to us. Yet Jérémy was distracted by the talk. Liverpool panicked.
'We talked about Chelsea and they thought he was going to sign there while we were just chatting about our youngest daughter. She's called Chelsea.
'Van Holsbeeck (former Andelecht boss) was convinced that he would lose Jérémy almost for free to Liverpool and wanted to make the most of it.
'But Anderlecht did everything to keep our son.'
