Liverpool could be thrown out of the Carabao Cup if they are found to have fielded an ineligible player in their third-round victory over MK Dons, according to journalist James Pearce, BBC, and Sky Sports.

The Athletic can exclusively reveal that the EFL have launched an investigation after it emerged one of the Liverpool players involved in Wednesday’s 2-0 win may not have satisfied the registration criteria to feature in the competition.

Victory set up a home tie with Arsenal at Anfield next month but Liverpool’s continued involvement in this season’s Carabao Cup is now in doubt.

EFL investigation into ineligible Liverpool player in Carabao Cup relates to Pedro Chirivella. He joined Extremadura on loan in January and case is over international clearance. Chirivella replaced Naby Keita after 63 minutes. Liverpool facing fine, but expulsion also an option.
