Liverpool cult hero Djimi Traore reunites with old boss Benitez at Newcastle

Djimi Traore enjoyed a reunion with his former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez at Newcastle's training session on Friday.

The defender achieved cult hero status during his time at Anfield and is clearly still on good terms with the Spaniard, who welcomes his old left-back to the north east.

Traore, who is now the Seattle Sounders assistant manager, stood with the Newcastle boss on the sidelines to observe the session ahead of the Magpies' game against Wolves on Saturday.

The pair also posed for a picture with DeAndre Yedlin on an overcast day on Tyneside.

Traore played in the legendary 2005 Champions League victory over AC Milan when Liverpool fought back from 3-0 down to win on penalties.

After conceding the free kick that led to Paolo Maldini's early opener, he worked hard to redeem himself.

The defender improved after the break and produced a goalline clearance to deny Andriy Shevchenko a likely winner.

But the season after Liverpool's famous triumph, Traore fell out of favour, despite having improved significantly under the tutelage of Benitez.

Steven Warnock and John Arne Riise moved ahead of him in the pecking order and he was sold to Charlton for £2million in 2006.
