Liverpool have loaned centre-back Rhys Williams to Port Vale.

The 22-year-old joins the League One side until the end of the season in the fifth loan of his career.

Williams was on loan at Aberdeen for the first half of the campaign but was recalled earlier in January after only making one appearance.

He was injured in pre-season and struggled to fully recover.

Jarell Quansah and Nat Phillips, who was brought back from a loan at Celtic, would be considered ahead of Williams in the Liverpool pecking order.

Williams stands a chance of some good action at Port Vale, having previously completed loans with Championship sides Blackpool and Swansea as well as Kidderminster in non-league.

He made 19 appearances under Jurgen Klopp in the 2020/21 season when Liverpool suffered an injury crisis at centre-back.

Those outings included Champions League experience and he helped the team qualify for the competition again while Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez were injured.

However, the academy graduate has failed to make an outing for the Reds since then.

'He comes into the squad and instantly enhances our defensive options with the quality that he possesses,' said Vale manager Andy Crosby.

'This loan signing is yet another example of clubs at the elite level seeing the way that we treat the players both on and off the pitch and the way that we play as a team, and ultimately seeing Port Vale as an ideal home for their future talents' development.'

Liverpool recently loaned out left-back Luke Chambers to Wigan in the same division and the two could meet in April.

Port Vale, who sit 15th in League One, play Wycombe next.

Their last match was abandoned as Reading fans staged a mass pitch invasion in protest against their owner Dai Yongge.

Players and officials were forced to run down the tunnel as hundreds of fans spilled on to the pitch to gather in front of the main stand, letting off blue flares.
