Liverpool fan Sean Cox has returned home for the first time since suffering life-changing injuries outside Anfield two years ago.
The Irishman had travelled to Merseyside with his brother for the Reds' Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma in 2018.
But the father-of-three was subject to an unprovoked attack from away supporters which left him in a coma with serious brain injuries.
He has since undergone extensive rehabilitation at the Walton Centre in Liverpool before he was transferred to a Dublin hospital but now he has finally been able to return to his home in Dunboyne.
His family shared their good news in a facebook post on his fundraising page.
'This is a day we as a family have been looking forward to for a long time,' said Sean's wife Martina.
'While Sean still has a long road to travel, having him home with us is an incredibly important step as we come together as a family unit again.
'I can’t thank enough those who have helped Sean along the way over the past two years. Without a doubt this support has made today possible.
'In particular, I would like to thank the incredible staff in Marymount Care Centre in Lucan for the care and support they have provided to Sean over the past number of months.'
Italian Simone Mastrelli was sentenced to three and a half years in prison in February 2019 after pleading guilty to assault.
There have been several fundraising efforts for Sean since the attack and he was also a special guest at Liverpool's home fixture against Manchester City in November where he met Jurgen Klopp and the players.
A legends match was staged at Ireland's Aviva Stadium in April last year with €748,000 raised for the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust.
John Bishop staged 'An Evening of Comedy' at Dublin's 3 Arena in January with Michael McIntyre, Dara O'Brien and Jason Byrne all taking part.
The fundraising event ended with all the acts taking to the stage for a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone.
