Liverpool injury list and expected return dates including Darwin Nunez and more

  /  Stamfordblue

Liverpool goal threat Darwin Nunez remains a doubt as they lock horns with Wolves in their FA Cup Third Round replay.

The Uruguayan missed the trip to the south coast where they were soundly beaten by Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon as the 3-0 defeat saw them slip down the Premier League table.

The Reds are in desperate need of a win, more so a reaction now, as they look to pick up their first win of 2023. A place in the Fourth Round of the competition is at stake as the Seagulls lurk.

As Klopp prepares to face a resurgent Wolves side, he must still cope without several of his players being unavailable. Some players shouldn't be sidelined for too long, while others are long-term absentees.

Stefan Bajectic is also back in contention, the boss confirmed. Here, we take a look at Liverpool's current injury list and the possible expected return dates for each absentee.

Darwin Nunez

The forward is a doubt for Liverpool's trip to Wolves in the FA Cup Third Round replay after suffering a muscle injury which kept him out of team training last week.

Nunez scored his 10th goal of the season with the equaliser against Wolves in the first half of the FA Cup clash on Saturday, but he was forced out of the defeat on the south coast.

The unspecified injury is only thought to be minor but it still has his involvement on Tuesday under scrutiny. Jurgen Klopp has said: "Progress with all availability.

"Darwin is very close but it's Monday and tomorrow's the game. He's very close."

Expected return date: January 2023

Virgil van Dijk

After being withdrawn halfway through Monday's defeat in west London, Klopp initially played down any fears that Van Dijk could be set for a prolonged period on the sidelines, insisting that the defender was more than happy to take to the Gtech Stadium for the second half if needed.

However, on Friday, the Reds boss confirmed that the Dutch international would be missing for "over a month" with a hamstring injury, putting his involvement in the Champions League round-of-16 tie against Real Madrid into doubt.

"Virg is a surprise for us. It was obviously a big blow, he didn't feel a lot," the German said. "I took him off, actually. No risk, it was not clear, maybe he could have tried.

"In the end the diagnosis was pretty harsh, we're talking about weeks, more than a month. I hope it goes quick but we will have to see. For now he is not available and that's how it is.

"He's never had an issue with muscles, never mentioned anything before and it just now happened. It's how it is. Nothing different. One sprint too much in that moment."

Expected return date: February 2023

Luis Diaz

Diaz has been out of action since he suffered a knee injury against Arsenal on October 3.

He was initially expected to return after the World Cup, but suffered a setback while in training in Dubai earlier this month. That led to the Colombia international requiring further surgery, which has extended his spell on the sidelines.

It's far too early to pinpoint an exact date of when Liverpool will expect Diaz to return to the pitch, but the hope is that it will be sometime around March.

Yesterday, the threatening winger posted a promising fitness update as he was captured at the AXA Training Centre going through his paces. He continues to step up his bid for fitness.

Expected return date: March 2023

Diogo Jota

Jota has been sidelined with a calf injury since the win over Manchester City on October 16.

The injury led to the forward missing the World Cup with Portugal, and he is still set for a spell in the treatment room as he continues his recovery.

While not yet returning to any form of outdoor training, Liverpool will hope that Jota will be able to be back in the squad sometime in February.

In his pre-Wolves press conference, Klopp provided the clearest update on the attacker yet. He teased that Jota may be back in contention for the Champions League knockout clash with Real Madrid.

"I don't know exactly how long. He looks really good, he is out there on the pitch, he is doing a lot of stuff already, but another few weeks.

"From my point of, yes, but I don't know," he added on the prospect of returning to face Real Madrid.

Expected return date: February 2023

Roberto Firmino

Firmino has been sidelined after suffering a muscle injury shortly before the clash against Man City, and as a result was left out of the trip to the Etihad Stadium.

The Brazilian also missed the clash against Villa, and has still not recovered in time to feature against Wolves

Liverpool will hope that Firmino will be back fit and available sometime in early January.

Speaking on December 23, Klopp said: “Bobby, it's like this, he is already on the better side of it, even when it is only a few days ago, but it's not a major thing, so we will look day by day with him.”

Expected return date: January 2023

Arthur Melo

Arthur has been sidelined since suffering from a muscle injury in October, and is still yet to return to training.

Since signing on loan from Juventus, Arthur has played just 13 minutes for the Reds which came as a substitute against Napoli in the Champions League.

Liverpool will hope that the Brazilian can recover sometime in the New Year and get back involved with the squad as soon as possible.

Expected return date: January 2023
