Liverpool legend Tommy Smith has passed away at the age of 74.
The former Reds captain died on Friday afternoon in his sleep, his family confirmed to the Liverpool Echo.
Smith gained the nickname 'Anfield Iron' during his playing days on Merseyside, becoming an integral part of the all conquering Reds side which accumulated silverware during the sixties and seventies.
Smith was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in October 2014, and battled bravely with the illness until his death.
During a storied career, Smith captained his boyhood club and made 638 appearances for the Reds.
Liverpool were graced with Smith's presence for 18 years, during which he won four First Division titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups and the UEFA Super Cup.
Smith's daughter Janette Simpson told the Liverpool Echo: 'Dad died very peacefully in his sleep shortly after 4.30pm today at Green Heyes Nursing home in Park Road, Waterloo, Crosby.
'I was on my way to see him when he passed a couple of minutes before I arrived.
'He had been growing increasingly frail and suffering from a variety of ailments over the last three months especially.
'We are obviously all devastated.'
