Liverpool mocked by rival fans in series of memes after shock loss to Atalanta

Rival fans have taken to social media to mock Liverpool after the Reds' shock loss to Atalanta.

Liverpool gave arguably one of their worst performances under Jurgen Klopp on Thursday when they went down 3-0 to the Italian side at Anfield in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.

It was a result few saw coming. Supporters had pretty much booked in an exciting final between Klopp's side and Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin next month, though that now looks a mere fantasy.

The hosts were tepid and timid, Anfield silenced as they watched their title chasers fold under the expectation in a competition they should have almost strolled.

Manchester United supporters in particular have taken delight in their rivals' struggles. Liverpool drew 2-2 with the Red Devils last week as their title charge hit a bump in the road, and rival fans have taken pleasure in mocking the Reds.

'The boy behind Liverpool’s downfall, show my starboy some respect,' one fan posted on X, formerly Twitter, accompanied by two photos of teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo.

'Manchester United have broken Liverpool. You love to see it,' added another.

A third United fan posted: 'Klopp leaves Liverpool without beating Ten Hag even once,' accompanied by a series of laughing emojis and Klopp's face edited onto a baby being held by Ten Hag.

More supporters pointed to the run-in being Klopp's last as manager after eight years in charge, and it seemingly not going completely to plan.

Having won the Carabao Cup with an injury-hit side in sensational fashion earlier this year, there were hopes of winning the quadruple for Liverpool with the FA Cup, Europa League and Premier League still to play for.

A frustrating FA Cup exit to United followed, however, with a week to forget stripping Klopp's side of the favourites titles in the other two competitions.

'Hope Klopp farewell tour is not just with the carabao cup for Liverpool Football Club before saying goodbye,' one fan posted on X, accompanied by a video of a Klopp lookalike struggling on the floor in frustration.

Another wrote: 'Good morning Liverpool fans. How's Klopp's Quadruple season coming along? This is where you'll run out of tears. Don't say we didn't warn you,' shared with Liverpool's tricky upcoming schedule.

A third, targeting captain Virgil van Dijk, wrote: 'Virgil van Dijk Ballon d'Or charge officially over, was fun while it lasted.'

The Reds face a hefty task to turn around the tie next week in Italy but will back themselves to do so having secured some memorable comebacks in Europe during Klopp's reign.

In the Premier League, they are second in the table, behind Arsenal on goal difference with seven games left to play.

This weekend they will take on Crystal Palace at Anfield, hoping to regain top spot with reigning champions Manchester City now favourites to lift the title.
