Liverpool set to appoint former Porto coach Vitor Matos to join backroom staff

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly set to add a new dimension to his backroom team by bringing in former Porto coach Vitor Matos.

In a role that was previously held by the highly-rated Pep Lijnders - before he was promoted to be Klopp's assistant - Matos, according to the Liverpool Echo, would help smooth the transition from academy to the first team.

Matos has been instrumental in the success of teams he has worked at, leading his 2017 Chinese club side to the U15 Chinese National Championship and U15 Superleague Championship, and the 2015-16 FC Porto B team winning the Ledman Liga Pro, with Matos as Performance Analyst.

Matos has previously worked with Lijnders when both were at Porto and so there is a familiarity that could return if he takes the role at Liverpool.

The academy has proven to be a useful pathway for players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and the hope at Anfield is that many more can follow the same trajectory in the coming years.

Harvey Elliott, Rhian Brewster and Ki-Jana Hoever have all made senior starts this season and are on the cusp of being integrated on a regular basis with the first-team set-up.

Matos would be a coup for the Champions League winners given he boasts 11 years of international coaching experience for clubs such as Porto, Clube Futebol Valadares and Clube Desportivo Trofense in Portugal.
