Liverpool train in high spirits ahead of Everton Merseyside derby showdown

If the pressure is mounting at Melwood, it certainly cannot be seen upon the faces of the players or manager Jurgen Klopp.

Premier League leaders Liverpool took to training on Friday, in high spirits ahead of their meeting with neighbours Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Klopp kicked off proceedings by handing out one of his customary big hugs to gate security manager Kenny Grimes, before taking to the pitches with his players.

There was a welcome return for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is back in full-time first team training following a lengthy rehab period after damaging his knee ligaments.

No sign, however, could be seen of Brazilian Roberto Firmino - who missed the recent 5-0 rout of Watford due to an ankle injury.

Firmino went over on his ankle during Liverpool's goalless stalemate with Manchester United at Old Trafford, though could still return in time to face the Toffees.

In his pre-match press conference, Klopp revealed: 'He was out there running yesterday (Thursday) but we have to see how he reacts... he is very positive but that's Bobby's nature as well.

'We have to see, I don't see any other player — okay maybe two or three more — that would even be in contention after the little problem he had. So it looks really good but if he will be ready for Sunday I don't know.'

The German was also full of praise for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who providing three assists during the heavy win over the Hornets.

'I don't think I have ever been part of a game where somebody got a hat-trick in assists. So it was special. Did he get the match ball? He wanted it, got it... so it was really cool and let's try to do something like that again!,' said Klopp.

Liverpool know victory is needed to stay ahead of Manchester City, who travel to Bournemouth on Saturday knowing they could - momentarily - go two points clear at the top of the table.
