Liverpool's 30-year wait for a title is a lesson for Man Utd, says Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned that Liverpool's 30-year wait for a title is 'a lesson' to Manchester United, but insists that his club won't have to wait that long as they head for Anfield on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp is on the verge of landing Liverpool's first championship since 1990 as they lead second-placed Manchester City a massive 14 points.

United are about to go seven years without a title and there are fears that they could endure a similar drought to their arch rivals.

'That's what we're working hard to make sure doesn't happen and let that be a lesson for us,' said Solskjaer.

'They've been close a few times and we can't let ourselves go another 24 years without winning the league – I'm sure we won't. Will take a little bit of time but we'll get there.'

Solskjaer believes United need a performance on a par with their famous Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain last season or last month's victory over Manchester City to inflict Liverpool's first league defeat of the season.

They came within a few minutes of doing so at Old Trafford in October but Adam Lallana scored a late equaliser.

'We need a very very good performance to go there and win but we beat City last month and had the PSG game,' added Solskjaer.

'We need to get to the level of those performances when you go away to the team that's top of the league.

'The last two performances at Old Trafford we've drawn twice and been close to winning both games, so we've got some games to look back at. That will give us loads of belief and if we perform to our best we have a chance to win.'

Jurgen Klopp has complained after those two games that United 'just defend' but Solskjaer was not worried by his rival's comments ahead of Sunday's clash.

'I don't think it's an accusation,' he said. 'I take it as a compliment we've defended so well. When the opposition manager is frustrated that's a good sign our boys have done well.

'I think we've been closest to winning both games so I don't know what the problem has been.'
