With teams around them likely to strengthen in the transfer market, Jürgen Klopp may hand first team opportunities to the U17 World Cup Golden Boot winner next season.
Young forward Rhian Brewster could be part of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s thinking for next season after impressing in a loan spell at Championship side Swansea City. Klopp revealed that he would be looking to bring through young talents to strengthen his squad, rather than rely on expensive signings.
“These boys need time but we will use them as often as possible, that’s the plan. Whatever we can save out there in the crazy world of transfer markets is good”, Klopp explained. “If the boys commit to that way it will be really good for them, I think we have proven that in the past, and I at Dortmund and now here at Liverpool, that it’s not about how old you are or who you are, it’s only about how good you are.”
Rivals Chelsea have already confirmed the signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech for a combined total of over £80 million to boost their title chances under Frank Lampard. Manchester City and Manchester United are also looking to invest in the squad in an effort to regain some ground on champions Liverpool next season.
Brewster impresses during loan spell
Rhian Brewster has been tipped as a star of the future since his switch from Chelsea as a 14-year-old but suffered a long-term ankle injury in an Under-23 fixture against Manchester City in 2018. He is yet to feature in a Premier League game for the club but was sent out on loan in January in order to get some experience of first-team football.
He has done well under former England U17 manager Steve Cooper and has scored seven goals in 15 appearances as the Swans chase promotion from the Championship. Cooper has built up a good relationship with Brewster after their time together in the national team youth set-up and has been full of praise for the youngster. “I’ve said before he’s a really good player, loves being here, working hard scoring goals, and everybody is benefiting here.”
His goal-scoring form has not gone unnoticed at Anfield and Jürgen Klopp spoke on Tuesday about the 20-year-old's performances on loan.
"He has played a good season at Swansea and showed his talent," said the manager. "They really wanted him and it's really important for a young striker, because they cannot score every week but they still should stay on the pitch.”
Liverpool's emerging talent
With Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Neco Williams already making first-team appearances for the club, this summer could see Brewster finally make the step up and become a fixture in the senior squad.
