Luis Diaz: Legendary Argentine manager questions why Liverpool spent £50m on the Colombia star

A former coach of Argentina has questioned Liverpool's decision to sign Luis Diaz in the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old made the move from Porto to Anfield last Sunday for a fee of £37.5million which could rise to £50m.

Diaz - who will wear the No 23 shirt at Liverpool - met Jurgen Klopp for the first time on Friday following international duty with Colombia.

But it was not a productive international break for the winger, who played the full 90 minutes in Colombia's 1-0 defeats by Peru and Argentina on Friday last week and on Tuesday this week respectively.

And Alfio Basile - who managed La Albiceleste between 2006 and 2008 - claims he saw little in Diaz's recent performances for his country to suggest he merits the fee Liverpool paid for him last month.

'That Diaz who Liverpool bought... I didn't see him do anything against Peru or Argentina,' Basile told Radio Cooperativa via Gol.

He then concluded by simply saying: 'How did Liverpool buy Diaz?'.

His comments were in sharp contrast to those uttered by Liverpool boss Klopp, who heaped praise on the 'exceptional' forward.

'Just a really good sign that we work on all fronts to try to improve this team. We have to be successful now and in the future,' Klopp said of the signing in his pre-match press conference for the Reds' FA Cup fourth-round clash on Sunday against Cardiff.

'We like pretty much everything about him. I've followed him for a while, [he has an] exceptional skillset and character.

'I am really happy we could get him in now. His story so far is a special one. I like that. Now he's one of us. We can't wait to welcome him here.'

Liverpool's medical team flew out to meet the Colombia winger in Argentina and concluded a deal last weekend.

Klopp was prepared to wait for the summer to buy the 25-year-old but interest from Tottenham and Manchester United meant he had to act fast and they were able to conclude the deal after paying an £8m installment to Porto.

But it was not such good news for Diaz on the international front, as Colombia extend their scoreless and winless run to seven games.

They therefore need a miracle if they are to avoid missing out on a World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Colombia enter the final two World Cup qualifiers five points behind a direct qualification place and four off the sole play-off spot.
