Lyon beat Real Madrid and Manchester United to the signing of 16-year-old striker Rayan Cherki, according to club president Jean-Michel Aulas.
Cherki signed professional terms at the Ligue 1 club in 2019 and scored his first senior goal in January this year.
He has drawn comparisons to Real Madrid star and former Lyon academy graduate Karim Benzema, and Aulas predicts that he will go to the top of the game.
'He is good enough to go to the highest level,' Aulas told Telefoot.
'We made sure we signed him because Real Madrid and Manchester United both wanted him.
'We want him to be a star here, we will support him and help him to progress his career here and be the leader of our attack.'
Real boss Zinedine Zidane is believed to be the driving forced behind the interest from Madrid in Cherki.
Reports earlier this year claimed president Florentino Perez was willing to sanction a deal that would see Cherki return to Lyon for two seasons to aid his development.
The teenager is fast making an impression in the south of France and has already made 12 first team appearances, scoring three times.
Cherki is a product of Lyon's academy, having been in their system since joining from Saint-Priest back in 2010.
