Man City get lucrative helping hand from FIFA after early Champions League exit

Manchester City have missed out on millions as a result of their Champions League exit, but their involvement in FIFA's revamped Club World Cup will help soften the financial blow.

City failed to reach the last 16 of the competition for the first time since 2013 after they were knocked out by Real Madrid. Pep Guardiola's side were beaten 6-3 on aggregate in their play-off clash against Los Blancos, with Kylian Mbappe netting a hat-trick in the second leg.

City's premature exit means they have missed out on the £9.3million prize money they would have received from UEFA for reaching the last 16. They have also missed out on the chance of earning up to £44m more from European football.

However, City are among the 32 teams that will take part in the Club World Cup next summer, with FIFA set to pay them £41m for their participation. They could virtually double that figure if they go on to lift the trophy.

That will help make up the shortfall caused by their Champions League failure this season, with City looking to continue revamping their squad next summer. City were very active in the recent January transfer window, spending big on the likes of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov.

Club captain Kyle Walker also left to join AC Milan on loan with an option to buy. More upheaval is expected, with the likes of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz and Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso said to be on City's radar.

Guardiola has also insisted he will continue as manager, having signed a new two-year contract extension back in November. When asked about his future after City's loss to Madrid, Guardiola told Movistar : "Yes, yes, yes, I'm going to stay [at City].

"We have drawn a very strong opponent at the best moment of the season and when the opponent is superior. There is no other option than to congratulate them. Ten or 12 years ago we weren't even in the picture.

"It's a competition with many details, a very emotional competition, and I have very few complaints about how we've behaved in Europe." City will be back in action on Sunday when they host Premier League leaders Liverpool at the Etihad.
