Jermaine Jenas criticised VAR over the decision to penalise Tottenham defender Danny Rose for handball after just 11 minutes in his side's Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City.
As Raheem Sterling fired in a shot from the edge of box, left-back Rose dived in with his arm raised and the ball struck him and deflected wide.
Referee Bjorn Kuipers initially did not give the penalty until notified by VAR that his decision should be revisited, and he awarded the spot-kick after consulting the pitchside monitor.
Jenas said: 'It's a huge moment, it really is. I think the fact that he's going to have a look at it himself is worrying.
'If you were PSG, would you be saying that is any different to what Kimpembe did?
'Really worrying signs for the game, in my opinion, really worrying signs. I know the rules are what they are. I feel like that's a bit of a step in the wrong direction as far as I'm concerned.'
Having checked the monitor, Kuipers then opted to show a yellow card to England full-back Rose for the offence.
Once confirmed, Sergio Aguero stepped up to take the spot-kick, but saw his effort saved by Spurs stopper Hugo Lloris.
In the wake of the decision, BT Sport co-commentator Jermaine Jenas expressed his objection to the decision.
UEFA opted to clarify the handball law after a controversial decision in Manchester City's last-16 clash against Schalke, with the wording now making reference to using the armsoutside of the natural silhouette.
