Man United trigger one-year contract extension for Marcus Rashford

Manchester United have reportedly opted to trigger Marcus Rashford's one-year contract extension after his fine start to the season for club and country.

Rashford endured a difficult 2021-22 campaign which saw him score just four league goals, while he was also consistently left out of Gareth Southgate's England squad. This saw him linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the summer, with PSG showing interest in the forward.

He has returned to form this season, though, netting eight goals in all competitions for the Red Devils, while he finished as England's joint-top scorer at the World Cup after netting three times in Qatar.

Erik ten Hag has seen enough to convince him that Rashford is worth keeping, and the 25-year-old's contract has now been extended until June 2024, as reported by The Telegraph.

Ten Hag has been particularly impressed by Rashford, and urged him to stay earlier this month after comparing him to World Cup Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappe.

Rashford is not the only player to have their contract extension triggered by United, as first-team trio Luke Shaw, Fred and Diogo Dalot have also had 12 months added to their deals.

Shaw lost his place in the starting XI at the start of the season to Tyrell Malacia, but has since won his spot back, and he started all five of England's matches at the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Dalot has moved ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the pecking order at right-back, and United are keen to keep hold of him.

Fred is into his fifth season at Old Trafford, and has not always convinced the United faithful, but has been a key part of Ten Hag's plans this season and his deal will now run until 2024.

There is less certainty over the future of David de Gea, though. His deal is set to expire next summer, and United are yet to trigger the option to extend his contract.

It is understood that they could look to offer the 32-year-old a shorter-term deal, and ask him to significantly lower his £375,000-a-week wages to stay beyond the end of the season.
