Man Utd & City splurged £50m totally on wages for injured players last season

Manchester United paid an astonishing £25.7million in wages to injured players last season - the most by any Premier League club.

Alexis Sanchez, whose United wage is worth in the region of £500,000 a week, spent 124 days on the sidelines with various injuries last season and was a primary reason for United's huge total while big-money earners Anthony Martial, Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera also spent significant periods out injured.

Pep Guardiola's City were the second highest spenders on injured players, forking out £24.95m as they went on to win their second consecutive Premier League title.

At the other end of the spectrum, Wolves spent substantially less than their Premier League rivals, spending just £889,000 - the least in the division.

Manchester United's hefty payments to injured payments is largely down to the 61 injuries they suffered last term.

Among their injury list for most of the season was former Chilean winger Sanchez, who was paid £6.25m whilst on the treatment table.

City, on the other hand, were much more fortunate and had only 35 injuries last season, but five separate injuries to £350,000-a-week midfielder Kevin De Bruyne resulted in the Premier League champions paying a massive £8.4m to the player while he was out of action.

Unai Emery's Arsenal were the third-highest payers to injured players (£19.85m) after suffering from long-term absences to the likes of Danny Welbeck, Rob Holding and Laurent Koscielny.

Making up the top six were mid-table West Ham United (£14.64m), fourth-placed Tottenham (£13.65m) and runners-up Liverpool (£12.06m).

In their successful quest to finish in the European qualification spots last year, Wolves suffered only five injuries last season, which explains why they sit at the bottom of the list.
