MANCHESTER UNITED and Arsenal have received a boost as Benfica close in on signing a replacement for in-demand star Darwin Nunez.
The forward has scored 26 goals in 28 appearances this term to finish the season as the Primera Liga's top marksman. He found the net 32 times in 38 matches in total - leading to serious interest from clubs across Europe.
Premier League duo United and Arsenal are both keen on bringing the 22-year-old Uruguayan international to England.
Now The Athletic claims that Benfica are lining up a move for Stuttgart's Sasa Kalajdzic.
The Portuguese side are expecting to lose their main man this summer and ideally want a deal completed as soon as possible to allow them plenty of time to fill the void.
Now moves are being made to bring in the Austrian to take over from Nunez.
Kalajdzic is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the Bundesliga side.
Both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have enquired about him, but Benfica are hoping to beat them to the punch and sign him themselves.
Stuttgart still hope that Kalajdzic will sign a new agreement with them - but if not then they will sell for around £21.2 million.
But a number of other outfits are also monitoring his situation.
Both Brighton and Southampton are believed to be interested in him.
Meanwhile, Benfica will be looking to recoup around £60m for Nunez.
