Manchester United are gearing up to pay their usual semi-annual dividend - with more than £11million set to flow out of the club - mostly into the pockets of their owners, the Glazer family.

With the club yet to make a move in the January transfer window, United will be paying out this window in the form of returns to shareholders.

United currently pay out a dividend on all of their shares of $0.09 (£0.07) per share and, with a little under 165 million shares in circulation, $29.6m (£22.7m) is paid out in dividends every season in two tranches.

The bulk of shares belong to the six Glazer siblings on the United board. Avram, Joel, Kevin, Bryan, Edward, and Darcie all own 120,000,000 Class B shares between them. The shares carrying almost all of the voting power and are not available for public purchase.

Some of United's Class A shares - the ones that are traded - carry almost no voting power and Class B shares that can be swapped 1:1 are also held by the Glazer family. More than half a million are held by Avram, Joel, Edward and Darcie.

Up to 30 June 2019, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was also in possession of some 539,146 Class A shares - which translates to a little under $100,000 per season in dividend payments.

United's annual report for 2018-19, published in November last year, contains 199 uses of the word 'dividend' and stated: "We currently intend to continue paying regular semi-annual cash dividends...from our operating cash flows."

The club's more recent financial results up to 30 September 2019 also explained: "A regular semi-annual cash dividend on the company's outstanding Class A and Class B ordinary shares of $0.09 per share is expected to be paid in January and June 2020."

In 2018-19, the club paid out £23.3million in dividends, measured at the current exchange rate.

These payments began flowing out of United in 2015, meaning more than £100m has been paid out in dividends since that time.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he has the backing and resources to spend in the winter window if the right profile of player is available. Solskjaer reiterated on Friday morning United do not expect many incomings or outgoings with three weeks until deadline day.

Left-back Ashley Young is keen to join Inter Milan this month just six weeks after United said they had shelved plans to sign a left-back.
