Man Utd edging closer to appointing Lille's Campos as director of football (Sun)

Manchester United are edging towards appointing Luis Campos as the club's new director of football, according to The Sun.

United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has spent 18 months looking for the right man, who now appears to be the Portuguese.

Campos currently holds the director of football role at Ligue 1 side Lille, but the report claims he could now get the same role at Old Trafford.

The report states that former United boss Jose Mourinho favoured a move for fellow countryman Campos, but at the time Woodward felt it would have given the current Tottenham manager too much power.

However, since then Woodward has now had a change of heart due to his amazing track record at Monaco and present club Lille.

The 55-year-old former manager has discovered the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho, Bernardo Silva and Anthony Martial for Monaco in the past.

He was also responsible for bringing in Arsenal's summer recruit Nicolas Pepe into Lille two years ago.

And Woodward is now hoping Campos can bring in similar gems into Old Trafford in a bid to change their long-term approach from spending heavily on established stars to developing young talent.

United have seen big names such as Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Bastian Schweinsteiger flop at the club, and their approach has changed slightly over the years, which was highlighted last summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw his squad bolstered in the summer with the purchases of Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

But United realise that if they are to successfully rebuild, those signings are only the start if they are to reach their ultimate objective of returning to the top of the table.

However, that aim appears far off at present as they sit in fifth place in the Premier League, trailing Chelsea by five points ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

Solskjaer's men have lost six top-flight fixtures this season and have at times lacked verve and energy in the midfield and attacking areas, in complete contrast to their opponents on Sunday.

But as reported by The Mail on Sunday, United will need to rebuild quickly with Liverpool set to replace them as England's richest club.

Jurgen Klopp's men could earn around £600million if they deliver more Champions League success this season, while forecasters predict will earn between £560-580million this season depending on Europa League progress.
