Man Utd expected to release James Wilson with 10 youngsters this summer

James Wilson is the surprise name expected to head Manchester United's released list with ten youngsters due to leave this summer.

The 23-year-old striker was regarded as one of the club's greatest prospects when he broke onto the first team scene in May 2014 with two goals against Hull City on his Premier League debut.

However, a series of relatively unsuccessful loan spells, some serious injuries and dips in confidence saw Wilson struggle to rekindle his early promise. He was sent to Aberdeen this season and, though he scored in their final league game against Hibernian on Sunday, it was only his fourth of the campaign.

Wilson is expected to receive a number of offers as United staff believe he can still make a successful career for himself but away from Old Trafford.

Defensive prospect Regan Poole is the other notable departure.

However, the 20-year-old is at least hoping to end his season on a high as he plays for Newport County against Tranmere Rovers in the League Two Play Off Final at Wembley on Saturday.

The Wales U21 international is wanted on a permanent deal by Newport but will put himself in the shop window with a good performance as other League Two and League One clubs plan to watch him play.

Midfielder Matty Willock, 22, who was on loan at St Mirren and Crawley Town this season, will also be allowed to go as will the skilful DJ Buffonge.

Former Oldham loanee Zak Dearnley, a right winger, will leave United and he will be joined by 20-year-old midfielder Callum Whelan, who had a spell on loan at Port Vale, 19-year-old midfielder Tom Sang, centre-back Tyrell Warren, 20, Dutch winger Millen Baars, 18, and USA right-back Matty Olosunde, 21.
