Manchester United goalkeeper coach Emilio Alvarez has admitted that any goalkeeper would've found it difficult to replace Iker Casillas in the Spanish national team.
David de Gea has worked with Alvarez for his entire time at Old Trafford and has struggled for form with his country.
"Whoever was going to follow Iker Casillas for Spain would've found it difficult," Alvarez told Radio MARCA.
De Gea was heavily criticised after last summer's World Cup and Alvarez suspects that the media favour players that play in Spain.
"If De Gea played for one of the Spanish clubs, I'm sure that he would've had more support in certain moments," he said.
"Those of us that know him want him to be judged for who he is as a professional and leave it to him to show what kind of person he is."
