Manchester United pair Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial missed training on Monday ahead of their side's crunch Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.

Both forwards were unwell and were absent from the group which took part in the session at Carrington, with United needing to beat the German giants to stand any chance of advancing to the last-16 of the Champions League.

Martial started the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, while Rashford came on as a 79th minute substitute.

While admitting that was one of his side's worst displays of the season, United boss Erik ten Hag is hopeful his side can lern from their 4-3 defeat to Bayern earlier in the camapign for this clash. "There were stages in the game where we played very good," Ten Hag said. "It was end-to-end for a long time in that game but also we suffered some mistakes that were absolutely avoidable.

"One thing for sure against Bayern Munich you have to play your best because they have a very good team and very good individual players.

"But as I say, Chelsea also amazing players, we dominate them and I think we can do it against Bayern as well.

"It's our team, we are not consistent, clear. But we have also a very good performance and highs, so if we get it and are in the right spirit then we are able to do it and we are able to beat any opponent.

"As I said, the game against Chelsea, the game against Everton, even the game against Galatasaray. I know this team can perform really high levels. We didn't do it three months ago, we did it last week.

"I know we can do it, when we have the right mood, the right spirit, it starts with the right attitude, everyone is ready for it, we are able to do it."

United midfielder Scott McTominay insists the squad remain behind the manager, saying: “It is the players’ responsibility, first and foremost, the players know that as well.

"We have had many amazing players and right now we are at the stage where we have big characters in the dressing room. It's not just a case like some of the other managers, where it has been a little bit toxic at times. The boys are firmly behind the manager.

“I've said that in many other interviews and that is the way it will stay. We've got an amazing coaching staff as well, so it can get lost in translation, with what the players think and what is said behind closed doors. But we just want to do well for the football club.”
