Man Utd 'tracking Napoli keeper Alex Meret' as potential David de Gea transfer replacement

Manchester United are closely monitoring Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret as they search for a replacement for current No1 David de Gea, according to reports.

De Gea was awarded for his eight years of service at Old Trafford with a lucrative new contract last September.

But the Spaniard's form has since plummeted and his numerous high-profile errors have prompted United chiefs to consider a change of shot-stopper.

Dean Henderson shone during a loan spell at Sheffield United this season and has been tipped to replace De Gea as United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first-choice goalkeeper.

But the 23-year-old Englishman is set on having a starting role and will push for a move if he does not receive assurances from Solskjaer.

Chelsea are interested in Henderson as they look to replace their own error-prone goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, while an extension with the Blades is a possibility.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding the futures of De Gea and Henderson, ESPN claims United have identified Meret as a promising option who could inherit No1 status in the near future.

The report adds De Gea is set to start the 2020/21 season between the sticks for the Red Devils, while Meret, 23, would emerge to compete for a starting role.

Meret has shared minutes with David Ospina since joining Napoli from Udinese in 2018 but is considered one of the most promising goalkeepers in Italy.

A successful season saw him earn his first Italy cap last November and make a crucial shoot-out save to deny Paulo Dybala's penalty in the Coppa Italia final to hand Napoli victory over Juventus in June.

Meret also made 22 league appearances as Napoli finished seventh in Serie A, which concluded last weekend.

He has also been linked with a move to Serie A rivals Torino, but Sky Sport Italia claim Napoli turned down a swap deal for Salvatore Sirigu.
