Manchester United got off to a winning start in the Premier League thanks to Joshua Zirkzee’s late goal on a nervy opening evening against Fulham at Old Trafford.
But with a lengthy injury list, Erik ten Hag’s team still look unfinished and there are expected to be a number of changes to come before the transfer window closes.
Jadon Sancho’s omission from the squad, despite Ten Hag confirming he was fit, has prompted fresh talk over whether he will remain at the club having been summarily dismissed on loan last season.
And despite three debutants last night, United may still look to bolster their defence and midfield.
Here are the big stories from Old Trafford over the past 24 hours.
Erik ten Hag admitted that Jadon Sancho was fit enough to play for Manchester United against Fulham but simply didn’t make the squad.
Sancho came off the substitutes’ bench in the Community Shield defeat against Manchester City last weekend but was nowhere to be seen on Friday for the Premier League opener. Ten Hag opted to start with Amad Diallo on the right wing before introducing Alejandro Garnacho off the bench.
It was a positive start to the season for United, yet the absence of Sancho meant some awkward questions for Ten Hag to field in his post-match press conference. The Dutchman claims to have made peace with Sancho following last season’s falling out , but the winger could still leave in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.
Victor Lindelof has been pictured relying on crutches to walk as Manchester United ’s early season injury crisis shows no signs of abating.
The Swedish centre back, who had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford earlier in the summer transfer window, missed the opening night win over Fulham.
And he has since been spotted hobbling with the aid of a crutch - in a short video clip posted on Instagram by his wife Maja that included the short caption: “Doing everything in slow motion these days.”
Lindelof is part of a walking-wounded list at Old Trafford also featuring new signing Leny Yoro, striker Rasmus Hojlund and left back Luke Shaw.
Lisandro Martinez jokingly confronted Jamie Carragher about his criticism of the defender following Manchester United's 1-0 win over Fulham.
The Liverpool legend notably claimed Martinez, who is 5ft 9in, would struggle in the Premier League after he joined United back in 2022. "We should never judge managers or players too early, but I'm convinced this can't work because the size of him playing in a back four," Carragher said.
"Maybe he could go left-back, maybe he could play in a back three, but in a back four, he cannot play there in the Premier League."
