Man Utd transfer news: Sterling move explained as double deal handed boost

Manchester United are closing in on making Manuel Ugarte their fifth summer signing - but the Red Devils don't want to stop there.

In a sensational development, United now want to sign none other than ex-Liverpool and Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling. The move would a swap deal with Chelsea in exchange for Jadon Sancho and it's being driven by one of the key figures appointed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Meanwhile, Scott McTominay is on the verge of leaving United after 22 years at the club. Napoli have agreed a £25.3million deal with the Red Devils, one which includes a sell-on clause, and his exit is set to be one of many which the Red Devils will sanction between now and 11pm on Friday.

Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford.

Ashworth keen on Sterling deal

Dan Ashworth is the driving force behind Manchester United's move to sign Raheem Sterling from Chelsea, it's emerged. The Red Devils' new sporting director is familiar with Sterling, 29, from his time in the England setup and the Times claim that Ashworth is particularly keen to get a deal done, despite the threat of backlash from fans.

United are determined not to pay a fee for the Chelsea winger, who's currently training away from the Blues' first-team squad after new manager Enzo Maresca made it clear that Sterling wasn't in his plans. Sancho was previously linked with a move to Chelsea, having not made the squad in either of United's Premier League games so far.

McTominay deal gives Ugarte green light

Manuel Ugarte will undergo a medical with Manchester United after Scott McTominay was authorised to sign for Napoli. The Red Devils' move for Ugarte, 23, hinged on whether they could sanction a sale and McTominay's switch to the Serie A giants has removed that obstacle.

The Uruguayan midfielder has been desperate to join United and he looks to have got his wish after weeks of negotiations between United and PSG's representatives resulted in a fixed £42.3million fee plus £8.4m in add-ons being agreed. Ugarte will be available to make his debut against Liverpool this Sunday so long as the relevant paperwork for his addition is completed before 12pm on Friday.

Chelsea make Toney move

Chelsea could attempt to hijack Saudi Arabian giants Al-Ahli's £50million move for rumoured Manchester United target Ivan Toney. Having entered the final year of his contract, Toney is expected to leave current club Brentford before the window slams shut, with multiple Premier League clubs interested.

United are among the sides keeping tabs on the England striker's situation but as the Telegraph explain, Chelsea have made an enquiry. It's noted that the Blues wouldn't be able to offer the same package as Al-Ahli but offer Toney Premier League football, and it notably comes after the Blues' move to sign Napoli's Victor Osimhen on loan hit a snag over a disparity in wage demands.
