On May 28, 2026 , according to Manchester Evening News, Man United are actively pushing ahead with midfield reinforcements and are ready to fully compete for Newcastle midfielder Tonali, while Ederson's transfer has also made a major breakthrough.

Italian media have reported that Man United are very interested in Tonali. Although Newcastle have valued him as high as 87 million pounds, Man United have not been deterred by the hefty price tag and are ready to go all out. Tonali joined Newcastle from Milan for 55 million pounds in 2023. His current contract runs until 2029, and the club have an option to extend it for another year. Tonali's agent had previously stated publicly that he might leave the team.

Carrick hopes to significantly strengthen the midfield. With Casemiro set to leave, the team has all but given up on bringing in Elliot Anderson. Man United has now reached an agreement with Atalanta for Ederson. The transfer fee may reach up to 38 million pounds, and the 26-year-old Brazilian midfielder is expected to be officially announced soon. He will not directly replace Casemiro, but will serve as an important rotation option and add depth to the squad.

Man United hope to complete their midfield reconstruction this summer, and Tonali is seen as a reinforcement who can deliver immediate impact and long-term value. However, Newcastle failed to qualify for European competitions last season and finished in the lower half of mid-table, so financial pressure may affect their determination to keep Tonali.
