19-year-old Manchester United youngster Jacob Devany said that Carrick dares to give young players opportunities, and all players in the academy are very excited.
This summer, Carrick watched the training of Manchester United's elite youth team for a week before the first team resumed training at the Carrington base, selecting young players for pre-season who could be promoted.
Manchester United's U21 team resumed training a week earlier than the first team. During the period when the first team stars had not yet returned to the team, Carrick watched the training sessions with the youth coaching staff every day.
This move once again confirmed Carrick's emphasis on Manchester United's youth training, and the young players were also full of praise and gratitude for it. 19-year-old Jacob Devany said that the manager's attention greatly encouraged the young players.
After the pre-season opener in Helsinki against Wrexham on Saturday, Carrick specifically singled out and praised Devany. Devany felt honored to have a first-team manager who paid so much attention to youth training.
"It's really important, we talk about it a lot as a team," he said. "It means a lot to us that Michael can be there in person. He was also there with the coaching staff for almost every training session in the week before the first team returned."
"He pays attention to what we do in training, and he clearly dares to give young players opportunities, which he already proved last year. It's really exciting to have a manager like that."
In the second half of last season, Devany was loaned to Scottish Premiership side St Mirren, where he performed well, starting 16 games for the team.
This experience made him fall completely in love with the rhythm of first-team football. Although he will continue to stay at Manchester United to fight for opportunities in the early pre-season, he is also prepared to go out on loan again to gain more experience.
"I want to play first-team football, whether it's at Manchester United next season or another team," he said. "My ultimate goal is to establish myself at Manchester United and get playing time every week."
"So, whether it means going out on loan again, like at St Mirren, to gain more valuable experience, or staying in the squad and learning from the top stars at Manchester United, I will gladly accept it. It's up to the club to decide."
In his half-season in the Scottish Premiership last season, Devany mainly played in his natural position – midfield, but he also played as a makeshift center-back in his youth team days, and he played in that position in the second half of the match against Wrexham. In the match, he was up against experienced Welsh international Kieffer Moore, and despite being about 6 inches (about 15 cm) shorter than his opponent, Devany still performed brightly and successfully attracted Carrick's attention.
"I've always seen myself as a midfielder, but ultimately, I play for Manchester United, so whatever position the coaching staff puts me in, I'll give it my all. But to be honest, my primary position is midfield," Devany said.
"In the past year or two, I've played in multiple positions, and no matter where I'm placed on the field, whether it's against teammates in training or players like Kieffer Moore, I'll give 100% and always believe I can come out on top."
"I think Dan Amer and I worked well together and managed to limit him. Moore is very strong physically and has had an excellent career, there's no doubt about that. But as a partnership, we dealt with it very well, and it feels great to be able to play against him in a game like this and test our strength."
