Man Utd's 5 failed transfer signings in deadline-day scramble for new striker

Manchester United sealed a late loan deal for former Watford striker Odion Ighalo after a deadline-day scramble on Friday.

Following Thursday's big-money acquisition of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon, attention turned to bolstering Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's strikeforce before Friday evening's deadline.

The United boss has been open about his desire to bring in an attacker this month, especially after Marcus Rashford's back injury compounded the summer departures of Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan.

The Red Devils boss did not expect any new faces to arrive when facing the media on Friday morning, but the club are understood to have sealed a shock deal for Shanghai Shenhua striker Ighalo.

But, before the Nigerian arrived, there were a host of shock names linked with a move to Old Trafford. So, who were United rumoured to be keeping tabs on?

Edinson Cavani was looking for a way out of PSG but no club were prepared to pay the French side's £25m asking price.

The Uruguayan has his heart set on a move to Spain with Atletico Madrid - they were only willing to pay £15m but still look as if they will get their man in the summer.

Chelsea were Cavani's other Premier League option but the player's interest never matched that of the two English clubs.

Bournemouth's Josh King, who came through the ranks at Old Trafford, emerged as a late target on deadline day.

The Cherries though were not prepared to let the forward go without finding a suitable replacement which always made a deal unlikely.

Other names on United's radar in their desperate search for a front man included Norwich's Teemu Pukki, but Norwich were not interested in letting their top scorer leave.

Southampton also rejecting an outline enquiry from United for their leading scorer, Danny Ings.

Leicester flop Islam Slimani, now at Monaco, is another name who has been mentioned.
